On the possibility of measuring longitudinal echos in the SPS

Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to investigate the possibility of observing a longitudinal echo signal in the SPS. We first illustrate the effect of echo signals in proton storage rings using data obtained in a numerical simulation of the longitudinal particle dynamics. In a second step we derive an analytic expression for the echo response and compare the analytic result with numerical data. Finally, we specify the required parameters for an observation of longitudinal echos in the SPS.
